How to maintain hot tub water quality on schedule

Maintaining good hot tub water quality is essential to ensure a safe and enjoyable soak in your spa.

Family and friends will appreciate clean, not green water to enjoy.  Sitting in a balanced spa also does not come with the excessive odors that chloramines can cause. Here is a basic hot tub water maintenance schedule to help you with the process:

1. Test pH levels and sanitizer levels weekly: You should use a quality test kit or appropriate test strips and adjust levels as needed.
For bromine based spas, use a bromine test strip and for chlorine based spas, use a chlorine test strip.  Nowadays there are also combo test strips that test for both chlorine and bromine such as Leisure Time Bromine and Chlorine test strips.

2. Shock the hot tub water: Shock your hot tub water at least once every week or two depending on spa use and bather load. This is a safe and effective way to maintain proper chemical balance and prevent the buildup of bacteria and algae by reactivating the sanitizer in the spa.  Do not over-shock, follow directions on the container for the gallons of water in the particular spa.

3. Clean the filters: Check and clean your filters every 2-4 weeks to prevent clogging and reduce the amount of chemicals used to keep the water clean. Rinse off the filter and replace, or use an overnight filter soak or filter spray for more optimal cleaning of the spa filter. Replace spa filters every year or so depending on spa use and condition of the filters.

4. Balance pH levels: Make sure to keep proper pH levels (7.2-7.8) in your hot tub water to ensure a safe and enjoyable soaking experience. Use test strips to measure pH level and adjust with either pH up or pH down to get into the acceptable range.

5. Clean the hot tub: To prevent the buildup of bacteria and other contaminants, clean your hot tub between water changes.
For a deep clean of the plumbing hoses and pipes, use Ahh-Some to purge the lines of accumulated biofilm.

6. Drain and refill the hot tub water: It is important to drain and refill your hot tub every 3-4 months. This helps remove any chemical buildup and keep the water fresh and clean.  Once a year, use Ahh-Some.

The simplest routine to maintaining great spa water quality is to use test strips to monitor the water quality keeping an eye on the sanitizer level and pH level. Shock the water and clean the filter.  The rest of the products are add-ons for special situations like metal gone for spas experiencing metals in the water to foam down for temporary relief of foaming water usually caused by soaps, lotions and shampoos in hair and on clothing over time.

Once total dissolved solids get to a certain point in a spa, it may be best to change the water.  Usually changing spa water every 3-4 months is sufficient.

Add fragrances that are specifically designed for hot tub use to create different experiences.

Now that your water is nice and clean, it's time to go enjoy your spa!
