3 inch plumbing is unusual in a hot tub. Most hot tubs use 2 inch plumbing, some use 1 1/2 inch or 2 1/2 inch.  The plumbing size is nominal and refers to the inner diameter of the connecting flex hose or PVC pipe, not any measurement on the actual PVC part.
