How to Drain QCA Spas Hot Tub - Utility Pump

Some QCA Spas and other hot tub models do not come with a hose bib or drain.  How to drain a QCA Spas hot tub that does not have a drain valve is a question often asked.  There are two alternatives to draining this spa type. Either use siphon (outlined below) or a submersible pump (faster/better).

Some QCA Spa models without drains include:

  • Dream Star
  • Mystic
  • Star Gazer
  • Riviera
  • Venus
  • Day Dreamer
  • Dream Weaver
  • Tranquility
  • Galaxy
  • Gemini

The submersible pump will drain a hot tub in as little as 10-15 minutes.  This is a time saver and also does double duty with any other standing water around the house.

Submersible pump for draining hot tubs

A good quality sump pump such as the number one rated Wayne VIP50 at 1/2 hp, does a great job at getting the water out, down to about 1/8" from the floor of the spa.  This pump connects to a standard garden hose with the 3/4 inch adjustable discharge adapter.

The other way to drain the spa is by gravity/suction.  The trick with this is to start filling the spa with the hose until all the air gets out of the line, then turn the water off at the source and unscrew the hose from the source side while leaving the hose submerged in the footwell of the hot tub.  Then you will notice the water start to run out of the hose in reverse. As long as the hot tub end of the hose stays in the water, it will continue to drain the spa by the suction effect.

This gravity drain method may take a few hours to drain a spa, but so do the hose bibs that typically come with the spas anyways.
